JAPANESE LABOR OFFICE CONFIRMS OFW’S DEATH FROM ‘OVERWORKED’, ORDER COMPANY TO PAY FAMILY
Is it possible to die from overwork? Yes!
In Japan, an overseas Filipino worker died after months of constantly working overtime – and the country’s labor ministry has recently ruled his death due to “karoshi” or death from overwork.
It was back in 2011 when Joey Tocnang arrived in Gifu Prefecture, Japan to work in a casting company. He cut steel and apply chemicals to mold, reports The Asahi Shimbun; and was paid the minimum wage which he, then, sent to his wife and daughter in the Philippines.
Tocnang was in Japan as a ‘technical trainee’, an arrangement that allows worker from developing countries like the Philippines to work in Japan for 3 years. He was about to go home to the Philippines after 3-years technical trainee program in Japan but was found dead in his apartment just 3 months before his flight back home.
A co-worker recalled how Tocnang had gone shopping the previous day for a souvenir to bring his daughter but, sadly, he was not able to hand it to her personally.

In an investigation regarding Tocnang’s death, the Japanese labor ministry discovered that he died of a heart attack and this could have been due to the long hours he had been working at the company. Just months prior to his death, he was logging anything from 78.5 to 122.5 hours of overtime per month.
Leaving him little time to relax and get a good night of rest, the overtime hours might have given him more money to send his family but eventually led to his death.
With urging of the Japanese labor ministry, Tocnang’s wife filed for claims and compensation against the company. This August, the ministry subsequently ordered the company to pay Tocnang’s family a lump sum payment of 3 million yen (around Php 1,400,000). Every year, the family will also receive 2 million yen (around Php900,000) as survivor’s annuity.
